It hasn’t rained for at least 10 minutes so I’m declaring open season on summer reading.
This is a list of books I’ve loved so far this year and a few I’m excited to read, preferably on a lounger with a cool drink nearby.
As you know, In Case You Missed It isn’t just about shiny new things so I’ve also linked to some previous books stacks so you’re not short of inspiration.
The Husbands by Holly Gramazio
Lauren comes home one night to find a strange man in her flat who claims to be her husband. Disconcertingly, the pictures on her phone and household bills suggest he’s right. Lauren slowly begins to realise that her attic is creating an endless supply of husbands for her. Lots of fun.
The Bee Sting by Paul Murray
Everyone has raved about this Booker-shortlisted novel depicting a dysfunctional Irish family. Next on my list.
You Are Here by David Nicholls
Two lost souls fall in love on a very rainy walking holiday. Properly funny and absolutely lovely.
Long Island Compromise by Taffy Brodesser-Akner
A dark family saga featuring miserable rich people. I fear I’ve tired of the genre but it’s TB-A so I’m willing to find out.
Same As It Ever Was by Claire Lombardo
I evangelise constantly about Lombardo’s first novel, The Most Fun We Ever Had. Her latest, out in July, is another messy domestic drama that is both darker and funnier than her debut and exquisitely written.
The Ministry of Time by Kaliane Bradley
A smart, inventive sci-fi romance. Funny too. Read my review here.
Hits, Flops and Other Illusions by Ed Zwick
Dispatches from a veteran Hollywood director. Wildly entertaining and full of great gossip. Read my review here.
Funny Story by Emily Henry
The best in the rom com biz. Read my interview with Henry here.
Caledonian Road by Andrew O’Hagan
I’m currently half way through and so far, so good. An elegant, state of the nation novel that depicts an eclectic cast of characters and contemporary London in vivid and compelling detail.
Evvie Drake Starts Over by Linda Holmes
A sweet, funny story about the unlikely relationship between a young woman who’s lost her husband and a major league baseball pitcher who’s lost his game. Totally charming.
10 great rom coms to read now (2023)
What are you planning to read this summer? Please share in the comments.
See you next time!

I adore the Husbands!!! easily a fave of the season. was very pleasantly surprised by Funny Story - last 2 of Henry’s were not my favorite but this one set it straight again. from the rom-com world - I really liked Carley Fortune’s latest - this summer will be different
I also evangelise about The Most Fun We Ever Had! Had no idea there was a new one out. Have you read Commonwealth by Ann Patchett? It’s another one in a similar vein that I will never tire of talking about.
