Advice and wisdom ahead of turning 40

The best ice cream is mint choc chip.

Always say the nice thing - if you’re thinking something positive about someone, tell them. Who doesn't like a compliment?

Telling your kids you’re sorry when you’ve been a dick is very important.

Being organised is cool.

If you want to get into journalism, have a ‘thing’ - a speciality that you’re passionate about that can set you apart from the rest.

Don’t do shots.

Asking questions is the most important conversational skill you need. People love to talk about themselves (me included!) so let them. I don’t understand people who never ask questions.

Always have paracetamol, Neurofen, mints, a pen and an emergency tenner in your handbag.

Don’t ever write, “Nice to e-meet you”.

Be proactive about making plans with friends. Arranging a table/exhibition/best route for a walk means the other person doesn’t have to think about it - what better demonstration of friendship is there?

The US brand, Everlane is very good for basics.

Go through your iPhone photos every few weeks, favourite the best ones and print the favourites every couple of months.

Books and candles are the best presents.

Don’t watch A Vineyard Romance on Amazon Prime.

The best salad dressing is: 2 heaped teaspoons of Dijon mustard, a large splash of white wine vinegar and 4/5 long slugs of extra virgin olive oil whisked together with a fork until creamy.

You can never have too many white t shirts.

No one actually prefers dark chocolate to milk.

Give people the benefit of the doubt. (But then don’t stand for it if their crappy behaviour becomes a pattern).

Start reading David Sedaris in your 20s.

Challah is the best bread for French toast.

Give Colin From Accounts a second chance.

Fold up the bottom corners when there’s something you like in a book.

There’s nothing wrong with being earnest sometimes.

Never have more than 10 unread emails in your inbox.

Don’t ever say to people with very young kids: “Little people, little problems. Big people, big problems”.

Look at Sézane for lovely sandals. (I recently bought these)

Pay parking tickets immediately so you don’t have to feel cross about them for longer than necessary.

Take Instagram and Twitter off your phone and only check them intermittently on your computer. You will earn back years of your life.
