To get in the mood for the second series of And Just Like That (starts tonight), I’ve been listening to the official companion podcast, hosted by the show’s executive producer, writer and director, Michael Patrick King. If you can get past King’s earnestness, self-aggrandising, maniacal cackling and use of the word “emotionalise”, it’s pretty good fun and the episode below features Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis talking about their Sex and the City origin stories and how they were cast in the show.
There is an absolutely wild detail that Nixon shares about how, after a protracted audition process, her agent cried over the phone to the SATC producers about her conviction that Nixon should just get the damn part. I may adopt this strategy for all future endeavours.
The Bear (“YES, CHEF!”) is also back for season 2 tomorrow (Apple TV+). I raved about it here last year and look forward to the return of Jeremy Allen White’s arms and one of the aggiest shows in recent memory.
If you’re in London in September and are looking to fill the Succession-shaped hole in your life, Succession: An Evening With the Writers is on at The Southbank Centre and it looks like there are still tickets available.
Finally, I can’t wait to read journalist Sarah Ditum’s upcoming book, Toxic: Women, Fame and the Noughties - “Britney, Paris, Lindsay, Aaliyah, Janet, Amy, Kim, Chyna, Jen: what fame did to nine women in the noughties, and what watching them did to all of us.” Yes, please and thank you.
See you next time!
